Yatsenyuk: Babi Yar is the site of one of the greatest tragedies in the world

The Prime Minster honored the memory of the victims of Babi Yar

Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseny Yatsenyuk called Babi Yar the site of the one of the greatest tragedies in the world. He made this statement during a ceremony to commemorate the 74th anniversary of the beginning of executions in Babi Yar, RBK-Ukraine reports.

“This is the site of the one of the greatest tragedies in the world, a terrible tragedy where Jews were killed for being Jews, where Ukrainians, Gypsies and Poles were killed, where the Nazis with their imperial ambitions simply destroyed human dignity and human life,” Yatsenyuk said.

Additionally, the Prime Minister declared that Ukraine would not allow a repetition of tragedies like Babi Yar. Yatsenyuk stated that the Ukrainian authorities “combat and stamp out any attempts at anti-Semitism, racial hatred, any attempts to infringe the rights and freedoms of people and citizen.”

Babi Yar is a district in the northwest of Kiev. Babi Yar gained world infamy as a place of mass execution of the civilian population, mainly Jews, Gypsies and Kiev Karaites, and also Soviet prisoners-of-war, carried out by German occupying troops and Ukrainian collaborators in 1941.
