Around 200 people attend meeting in memory of the victims of Babi Yar

To commemorate the 74th anniversary of the tragedy of Babi Yar in Kiev, mourning procession and a meeting by the “Menorah” monument were held.

Around 200 people took part in the event, including residents of Kiev, students, representatives of Jewish communities, and also the Israeli ambassador to Ukraine Eliav Belotserkovski and the German ambassador to Ukraine Christof Weil.

The German ambassador stated that Germany takes all the blame for the events that took place in Babi Yar in 1941.
“I am an ambassador of the country that brought Europe war and destruction, and caused tens of thousands of deaths at Babi Yar. Democratic Germany, feeling its historical responsibility, will always be on the side of those who fight against racism. I ask for forgiveness and bow my head before the victims of Babi Yar,” said Christof Weil.
Participants of the meeting observed a moment of silence for the victims of Babi Yar and laid flowers by the “Menorah” memorial.

During the German occupation of Kiev in 1941-1943, Babi Yar was the site of mass shootings by German invaders of the civilian population and Soviet prisoners-of-war. In just two days, the 29th and 30th of September 1941, almost 34,000 Jews were executed there.
