Levi Yitzhak Schneerson Jewish Lyceum No. 144 in Dnipro ceremonially marked Knowledge Day and the beginning of the new school year. On September 1, students returned to the lyceum, while the main figures of the celebration were the first-graders, for whom a new stage of life had begun. This was reported by the Jewish Community of Dnipro.
The symbol of this year’s celebration was a paper airplane, which the organizers called a small dream meant to “give wings.” The program included a video address by the Lubavitcher Rebbe; the first-graders recited 12 psukim together, while the sound of the shofar served as a reminder that Rosh Hashanah is approaching.
Shmuel Kaminetsky, Chief Rabbi of Dnipro and the region, addressed the students, teachers and parents with words of congratulations. Lyceum principal Olena Krasnova wished the students a successful school year, new knowledge and achievements, and also emphasized the importance of the spiritual baggage the children receive at the lyceum.
One of the celebration’s most memorable moments was the meeting between the first-graders and the eleventh-graders. The older students prepared symbolic “baggage” for the youngest ones: the Torah, holy Jewish books, tefillin and a tallit, the light of Shabbat, Jewish holidays, kashrut, knowledge and patience. After the first bell, the students launched paper airplanes together.
