The team behind the Memory project recently visited Kovel, Manevychi, Turiisk and Trokhymbrid in Volhynia, where they inspected sites of mass shootings, old Jewish cemeteries and memorial signs. The Lutsk Jewish Community reported this.
During the trip, the participants wanted to see the condition of these locations for themselves and determine the scope of work for the coming year in order to preserve the memory of people whose lives were brutally cut short.
A meeting with representatives of Kovel’s local authorities was particularly important. The participants discussed further cooperation, as well as the possibility of creating a new memorial incorporating historic matzevot currently stored on the grounds of one of Kovel’s enterprises.
The Memory project emphasized that this work concerns not only the past, but also the kind of people we want to be today. The project noted that memory can be lost, but it can also be restored, preserved and passed on.
