On August 30, the scientific and practical conference “Transcarpathia’s Ethnic Diversity: History, Cultural Heritage and Museum Representation” was held at the Transcarpathian Museum of Folk Architecture and Life in Uzhhorod. This was reported by the Uzhhorod branch of the Hesed-Arie Jewish Charitable Foundation.
Representatives of national communities, scholars, museum professionals, local historians, representatives of public organizations and creative groups, as well as members of the public, gathered at the Uzhhorod open-air museum. Participants discussed Transcarpathia’s multicultural heritage, its preservation and contemporary interpretation.
The conference continued the cultural and artistic event “Transcarpathia’s Ethnic Diversity,” launched last year to mark the museum’s 55th anniversary. This year, the format was expanded to include a scholarly component.
The first discussion panel, “Transcarpathia’s National Communities: History, Traditions and the Present,” featured representatives of the Hungarian, Romanian, Slovak, German and Jewish communities. They included Tiberiy Sabov, Maria Lavriuk / Maria Lavriuk, Yana Dudash-Ryzhak, Yuliia Taips and Yurii Halpert.
They spoke about historical memory, folk traditions, cultural identity, the activities of national and cultural associations, and the importance of preserving one’s heritage in the modern world.
